Dogen Zenji was a very important Zen master during the Kamakura period, 750 years ago. After his mother died, he traveled to China to search for the true Zen. One bright morning, enlightened, Zenji returns to Japan as a devoted evangelist of the 'new' Buddhism. This film is a biographical account of his life, starring a Kabuki actor Kantaro Nakamura. It offers a taste of Zen in its earliest days in Japan, with gorgeous on-location scenery and wonderful period detail. This film has English subtitles and it will be shown on the cinema monitor in the study.
Refreshments will be provided!
Appamada is not just the occasional mindful thought or attentive state of mind, it’s actually a commitment to being attentive. It’s more than just a meditative state of mind, it’s more than just being mindful. It has to do with that primary ethical or moral orientation we have in life, with which we bring into being whatever activity we’re engaged in. Whether in formal meditation, in our interactions with other people, in our social concerns, or in our political choices, it’s the energetic cherishing of what we regard as good.
