Hello Gaia group. I wanted to share this wonderful new project that recently started in Austin. The idea and infrastructure have already spread to other cities.  I hope to see this really take off as it is quite a beautiful model for building community and sustainability.

Cathy King-Tryce wanted to make sure the Gaia group knew that John Phillip
Newell will be at All Saints Episcopal Church near UT on November 11-13.
She writes:  He is a minister from the Church of Scotland. He has been the resident minister on Iona and is the minister in residence for Ghost Ranch, NM during the summer. I know of him through my geography advisor at Texas State U. He usually focuses on spirituality and the Earth. The November presentation looks different than the last talk I heard, but he usually discusses the Earth and brings in his own family experiences.
I believe it is either free or $25. Here is his website: http://www.jphilipnewell.com/
or you can check the All Saint's site: http://www.allsaints-austin.org/

Hats off to Eric for the all day workshop on "The Work that Reconnects" at the Round Rock Public Library on April the 16th in celebration of Earth Day.  It was a great day.  Eric did a fine job.  It has really affected me.  Thank you, Eric!

While browsing Joanna Macy's website I came across some info for a film being put together that is "people powered".

http://thegreatturningfilm.org/

I am unable to make a donation right now, but thought that I would pass this along for others that may be more financially able to support this important endeavor. There is an orange box on the right hand side of the screen asking for donations to help support the completion of this film.

Also, if anyone is interested, I will be facilitating an all day workshop (9am - 5pm) for "The Work that Reconnects" at the Round Rock Public Library on April the 16th in celebration of Earth Day. It will be a library supported event. I plan to make a flier and will get that out for distribution as soon as it is finished.

I noticed that only four people have responded to Peg's generous offer to conduct an all day seminar of Joanna Macy's Training in January. I am curious what that means. The link doesn't offer the option for saying, "thanks for the offer but I'll get the training another way." Here's the link to the survey if any of the remaining 9 of us are interested in the training. http://www.doodle.com/nqtvnds7gc9gr3xt

I was going through my mail tonight and was thinking, "It sure would be nice if there was some kind of do not mail list similar to the do not call list." I started calling companies one by one to try and opt-out of future mailings. I got to company number three and they informed of this website...

https://www.optoutprescreen.com

It won't stop all your junk mailings, but it will stop most mailings from credit solicitors (which for me is the bulk of the junk mail I receive.) This may be common knowledge, but it was news to me.

I just opted-out and am thinking there will be a few appreciative trees now.

: )

Peace and Such,

Eric

UT's Sustainability event Thursday and Friday:

The Center for Sustainable Development, the UT Office of Sustainability and the Campus Environmental Center are hosting a two-day event this Thursday and Friday, September 9-10, 2010, showcasing the many sustainability-related research projects and operations initiatives here on campus. This event is co-sponsored by the LBJ School of Public Affairs, the Center for Teaching and Learning, and the Environmental Science Institute.

Thursday, September 9th, several UT facilities, such as the power and water plants and various other facilities, will be offering tours throughout the day for members of the UT community to learn about the operations side of sustainability on campus. Later that evening, in Gearing Hall Rm. 105, the Campus Environmental Center will be hosting their annual Earth Summit, a panel discussion focused on green buildings and energy management, with key stakeholders from across campus. You must RSVP for the tours by visitinghttp://utenvironment.org/get_involved/events/unique_opportunity_tour_campus_buildings/

On Friday, September 10th, the Center for Sustainable Development will be hosting a full-day symposium, where members of the UT community will be giving over twenty short presentations covering a wide variety of topics. This event will be held in the Bass Lecture Hall (located within the LBJ School's Sid Richardson Hall) from 8:45 am until 3:45 pm. Lunch and refreshments will be provided, as well as USB drives containing essays about the presentation topics that will be covered throughout the day. See http://www.utexas.edu/maps/main/buildings/srh.html for directions to the building. Parking details for campus may be found at: http://www.utexas.edu/parking/maps/visitor/visitor-map.pdf

Appamada is not just the occasional mindful thought or attentive state of mind, it’s actually a commitment to being attentive. It’s more than just a meditative state of mind, it’s more than just being mindful. It has to do with that primary ethical or moral orientation we have in life, with which we bring into being whatever activity we’re engaged in. Whether in formal meditation, in our interactions with other people, in our social concerns, or in our political choices, it’s the energetic cherishing of what we regard as good.
